This article is in no way to be construed as medical advice. Therefore when eating something new or trying new products you should always check with your medical doctor for potential allergic reactions or contraindications to any current medicines or supplements you are taking all while considering your current physical condition.
1. Start Eating Whole Foods
Let’s get real: if your food comes in a box with 47 ingredients (half of which you can’t pronounce), it’s time to rethink. Whole foods—think vibrant fruits, crunchy veggies, and fresh proteins—are your new best friends. Hit up your local farmer’s market and bask in the glory of real, nutrient-packed eats. Moreover not only will your body thank you, but your taste buds will too. Plus, nothing screams “I’ve got my life together” like carrying a tote bag full of carrots and sourdough bread sticks. Eating out? Look for farm to table restaurants that are sure to treat your taste buds and bring healing to your gut.
2. Make Healthy Swaps
Sugar cravings? We’ve all been there. Above all instead of reaching for that refined white stuff, opt for natural alternatives like honey, coconut sugar, or maple syrup. Even organic cane sugar is better for you than white sugar. These swaps not only taste amazing but also save you from the sugar crash that sneaks up faster than a last-minute meeting invite! It’s all about progress, not perfection—your morning coffee or baked treats will still taste divine and there’s no sugar let down.
3. Embrace Mobility Training
Ladies, it’s time to stretch like your life depends on it—because, honestly, it kind of does. Mobility training focuses on keeping your joints, ligaments, and muscles strong and flexible. Think intentional dynamic stretches and rolling out muscle kinks with a foam roller (aka your new BFF). You may have seen the video where the woman says she’s one sneeze away from being in traction, lol, that does not have to be you!
As a result your future self will thank you when you’re effortlessly bending down to grab something you dropped without pulling a muscle. While I have yet to take a class from Beard I follow him on Youtube for new stretches and mobility training I can add to my routine. You can find his inspiring story and channel Beard the Best You Can Be
4. Swap Out Toxic Products
If you can’t read the ingredient label, it’s probably time to say goodbye. When you think processed foods that are produced by large companies en mass I want you to think of the picture below. Your skin—your body’s largest organ—absorbs what you put on it, so ditch the toxins for cleaner options, again whole foods for the win here. For example, if you are looking for a non-toxic sunscreen..I got you. Check out my article on how to save your skin and ocean reefs.
There are tons of great natural products out there, from food to makeup to skincare products to household cleaners, that work just as well without the chemical soup. Bonus? You can make many of these on your own. I feel like a superhero knowing I’m protecting myself and my family and not hurting the planet by excess plastic bottles and dyes from these products.
One easy way to help determine if a makeup product or food item is safe is by using the Yuka app. You can download it on Google Play or the App Store. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve put a product back on the shelf because I refuse to eat man-made chemical dyes or additives that many foods contain. The great thing about Yuka is that it lists the product ingredients and will rate each one with a green, yellow or red code and inform you what the risks are for each ingredient. It will also provide alternative options that are healthier for you; talk about a win win!!
5. Set Goals and Celebrate Small Wins
Grab a journal and jot down what you want to achieve. Keep it realistic: focus on goals that can be accomplished in a few weeks to three months. Maybe it’s drinking more water, cooking three healthy dinners a week, or mastering a 5-minute plank (you got this!). Once you crush those short-term goals, move on to bigger ones. Celebrate your progress—yes, even if it’s just with a happy dance in the kitchen.
One of my goals this year is to remove old recipes and cookbooks that I don’t use any more. My eating habits have changed and now that I am eating more whole food options I won’t be needing Pillsbury dough canister bread loaves and cookies to make desserts and such. Here is a recipe book style that I love
